The people on Mars are attacked by Martians who have a huge army of spacecraft that shoot pink and blue lasers and listen to blasting techno music every second of every day. The martians are upset that mankind has disturbed their red planet rave and seeks vengeance in the form of pain and blood and loud, flashy, blinky lights and explosions. Released in 2000 for the Dreamcast by Capcom, Mars Matrix is a vertical scrolling shoot ‘em up or SHMUP and is pretty crazy. You could even call this game a maniac shooter, among the most challenging of the science fiction based SHMUPS. The vertical scrolling gameplay is shown off in the footage as you collect lots of experience point gold cube things and blast away aliens like it’s just no thing. A rare game and fairly collectible today, Mars Matrix is a true classic shooter and worthy of your attention if you like games like Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun and Raiden 3. It would be great to see this game released on a next gen console like the PS3 or Xbox 360 Live Arcade in the future, but this Dreamcast version has great graphics and sound and totally rocks. But this game is different because it uses gunpods and the mechanized arm that controls them. It’s amazing and regarded by some as the best shooter ever made. It also has a light saber, homing missiles and a foxy announcer who teached you things in the training seminar. This game should be remade in 2008, 2009 or 2010 as a Playstation 3 PS3 game or something for Xbox Live Arcade.

DUALITY ZF introduces two duality features:

The 1st Classic Video Game review show on the Internet since 1999, Classic Game Room HD busts out XEVIOUS for the Xbox 360 Live Arcade! This 1980’s arcade retro classic set THE standard for vertical scrolling space shooters, or SHMUPS as we call them today. In fact this is considered the grandfather to shmup video games. You are the lone starfighter fighting against impossible odds in this coin-op classic. Not to be confused with the classic Silpheed on Sega CD, this is a review of Project Sylpheed: Arc of Deception. Do you like flying space ships and blowing things up? Well, so do I! It’s much better than the Demo on Xbox Live.

This game which originated in Japan is a space shooting game like Omega Boost mixed with Robotech. It has a great anime and science fiction style that drops you into the middle of interstellar violent mayhem!

Only on the Xbox 360 game system, which is like an Atari but without the fine wood trim.

The Classic Game Room review of AEGIS WING for Xbox Live Arcade XBLA! Released in 2007, Aegis Wing is a horizontally scrolling SHMUP video game, a bullet-hell style shooter for XBLA. This game was developed by three Microsoft interns and is incredible fun to play and is a FREE download from Xbox Live Arcade XBLA. FREE!? That’s right, free! And it doesn’t even suck. Actually it is a lot of fun. This game may not be as challenging or complex as some other SHMUPS out there like Einhander, Darius Gaiden or Thunder Force 5, but it is still darned fun to play. You can also play with up to 4 people on Xbox Live (you and 3 friends) and can form a huge, giant space ship that shoots laser beams all over the screen to destroy alien invaders or whoever they are. So it’s like forming Voltron, but not really. Since they aren’t lions and there’s no hot princess in a pink jumpsuit. Mmmm… princess. Also there’s no irritating talking mice roaming the castle. Aegis Wing, check it out because there aren’t many things free in life, after you buy Xbox Live Gold of course. Originally released by Sega in the arcade, it later made it to the Japanese Dreamcast (JPN) and then to the Nintendo GameCube here in the United States. Treasure made Ikaruga for the Xbox 360 online service and made it well with achievements, gamer points and high definition graphics. The genre of this game is a SHMUP, but it Shmups like you’ve never seen it before. This awesome Vertical scrolling shooter, Manic shooter, Shoot ‘em up shooting space ship game is based on a unique polarity system where you ship can absorb enemy fire of the same black or white polarity that your ship is in at the time!! Is there a chance that we’ll be seeing RADIANT SILVERGUN on Xbox Live any time soon? Let’s hope so! Treasure was formed by former Konami employees an they have produced games like Wario World, Gunstar Heroes, Bangai-O and Mischief Makers.

The original Capcom WW2 era vertical scrolling shooter is back with 1942 Joint Strike on the XBLA. This review covers the gameplay, the graphics and sound and shows of the game’s use of 3D 3-dimentional backgrounds in a 2D shooting game. This is a SHMUP (shoot ‘em up) much like Ikaruga or Radiant Silvergun, some of the best SHMUPS ever made. Pilot your WWII era fighter plane against wave after wave of enemy bombers, mine layers and other fighter planes. Shoot them down with an arsenal of cool weapons like the spread shot and laser beam. Collect power ups, play with a friend and have a great time. It’s great to see companies like Capcom releasing games on the 360 and on the Sony Playstation Network for the PS3. I played 1943 on the NES Nintendo right before recording this review so I was down with the 194x if you know what I mean. A maniac shooter from a past that doesn’t exist. You can get Gamer Points too. Hooray. I think this is also on the Playstation Network and not sure if they’ll use it for Home or not. Not sure if it is on VC Virtual Console on Wii either.
